'Q' contents page.

This is the first contents page that I will analyse, it is a contents page from the magazine 'Q'. The contents in this magazine is very much like the front cover, organised. As you can see the main image of the magazine or the main aim of the magazine is shown towards the top right, but is very large. As with the cover this gives a bit of information of what is inside the magazine, it also tells you the page where this article or story is positioned. This is for people who have bought the magazine solely for this one story. This is the main story; the other stories or articles are positioned down the left of the magazine in an pacific order, generally they will have the lower numbers at the top and the higher numbers at the bottom, again this shows that this magazine is organised, additionally the story that has a lower page number (so you view it before others) is the most important, they will want to have the most important news at the front of the magazine, so that people will read on and overall enjoy the magazine.

Again, like the cover there is a frame embedded around the contents page. Again this makes the magazine looks organised and professional, it also keeps the writing away from the main images, this is to make the main images be in your face and stand out above the crowd.

Most magazines have a lightly coloured background with darker colours, or a dark background with light fonts and images. This magazine goes for the light background approach, because of this most of the fonts are black, so it is easy to read, however , 'features' and 'every month' are in white, so you wouldn't expect this, but they put a dark red box over it so it stands out and keeps wth the colour scheme. This is used in other places, basically for the sub-headings, they place the white font of the caption over a black box. Finally 'Oasis Special' is in a large font as this makes it stand out, this is because it is a key part of the magazine.

Magazine Analysis House Style.

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

Analysis Of Magazine Cover (Rolling Stone)

Remove formatting from selectionThis is the final magazine I will analyse, this magazine is called 'Rolling Stone'. This magazine is aimed at people who like rap or dance music. Firstly the main image (Jay-Z) is in the centre of the cover and the shot of him is a very close up shot, this shows that he is the main part of the magazine. This is a model shot, not a paparazzi shot, as he isn't shocked or the image isn't shocking. He is posing and is dressed like he is just for this cover. He is also in front of the title, this is because people remember what the title is and can see what it says without all the letters shown and it also shows the importance of Jay-Z.

All the fonts have the same font colour; silver, black and a light pink, this shows consistency throughout the cover and is easy for people to see/read. Other than the title the captions are all in capital lettering, this shows us that the magazine is generally informal this will appeal to the reader. The captions also create a frame around Jay -Z, again this shows that it is a tidy and professional magazine, and again makes the main image stand out. Additionally on this cover the sub title is smaller and in a different colour to the caption underneath, which may indicate that the caption itself is more of a audience puller rather than the subtitle.

The background in this cover is white, this makes the main image and all the fonts stand out and be easily read or seen. Finally the splash, going straight across Jay-Z, telling you the main subject of this issue of the magazine, this should tempt you into buying the magazine and reading on.

Analysis Of Magazine Cover (Q)

This is my second analysis of the magazine Q. In the other analysis I noticed that the images usually linked to the writing and this one is no different. This cover is mainly about R.E.M, this is because they came back and began to produce music again, so immediately they are on the cover, this will make people think and notice that they have come back. On this cover they show the band in and they take up most of the page, like most important factors they are central. They also say that inside is a free R.E.M. jukebox and a free R.E.M. CD, this will appeal to people who enjoy this genre of music but more so to people who enjoy listening to R.E.M. You know that they are the most important feature for two reasons. One is that they are so large compared to everything else on the page and secondly they are placed in front of the masthead. This shows that they are the main selling point of the magazine.

The singer of R.E.M. has gold hairs littered across his face, at first you think that they are there to make him stand out but as you read the caption underneath you notice that they link. 'Rejoice, they've struck gold again', the world gold is used as a metaphor and is the reason why they made his hair gold.

As with most magazines the language used in this magazine cover is informal, hence the words all n capitals, however most magazine covers have a certain layout, where as this one is different. The layout here is just messy and all over the place, although the captions are generally at the sides and the images are central. Most covers have light backgrounds where as this one has a dark background, this is to make the gold stand out. This is the opposite of most magazines. Also with most magazines the shot used is a model shot, again the band has been made to look different just for this cover.

Analysis Of Magazine Cover (Vibe)

This is the magazine 'Vibe' which is aimed at all ages and both men and women. It also generally has a variety of different artists and bands inside the magazine. It also has fashion, cars, electronics, gadgets and music; which I think reflects with Beyonce on the cover. Beyonce will attract both men an women to the magazine, men because she is attractive and women because she is an excellent artist. This is also the reason that Beyonce is above the title of the magazine, she is more important than the title, because she has a bigger appeal than the title. They also have a caption by the side of her, this will also entice the viewer into buying the magazine, so they place this above her as it will make you read on.

As usual with magazines they have a light background where as the fonts are generally a darker tone. Again with other magazines there is a generally a certain layout used, and this is no different. This magazine has a frame, the writing is all in the frame and the main subject - Beyonce is in the centre grabbing the readers attention, which is what the developers want. At the top of the cover there is a few more names of artists or bands, again this is to entice the viewer into reading on into the magazine.

The writing in this cover is all informal, hence it is all in capital letters, this is a clever technique as it stands out and the informal language is more appropriate for the target market. Beyonce is also taking part in a model shot, this means she is posing and has been made the way she looks just for the cover of this magazine.

Analysis Of Magazine Cover (NME)

The second magazine cover that I am going to analyse is the NME magazine. Firstly the masthead is big and bold; like with many mastheads, this is to show the viewer what magazine it is. The masthead is also surrounded by a dark black shadow, again this gives the masthead effect and makes it stand out. The colour scheme of this cover is black, red and white (generally), this is shown in the masthead and is consistent throughout the cover (with other pieces of writing on the cover.) The colour red makes the magazine seem hot, or evil as does the black, this could send a message to the reader that there will be hot stories inside the magazine.

Next we move to the the main image on the cover. The two people involved; Alex Turner and Miles Kane have had a model shot, this is because they are posing and have been dressed pacifically for this cover. These two characters take up the majority of the cover, this shows that they are the main part of the magazine and the most important factor of getting the target market involved. Both these two are wearing black this contrasts with the pale background, again to make them stand out from the crowd. They are also kept in a constant layout because of a surrounding frame made from the quotes and phrases used by the magazine on the cover. This keeps the whole layout very tidy and professional. Additionally the masthead 'NME' is slightly hidden behind these two people, this is again to prove that they are the main interests of the magazine and that they want to get them across.

Analysis Of Magazine Cover. (Q)

This is the Q, as you can see the title 'Q' is in big bold lettering and stands out from the red background surrounding the letter Q. You immediately know which magazine it is because of the simple title. The main subject is Lily Allen , which is why she is the main picture on the cover. She has black clothes on, which is why the font over her is in white, so that is stands out and is readable. Additionally she is in black because of the two panthers next to her, these are both black so they all link to each other. The Panthers and Lily Allen's tights are black and the background is a pale or light grey, so again it makes the main images stand out. 'Sexy Beast' this links to Lily Allen as well as the two Panthers again linking the images together. Also towards the top right of the magazine, again links to the Panthers, it says Oasis, and underneath the sub heading of Oasis; which stands out is 'I am a Tiger' everything on this cover links together and is all visible and easy to read. The two words 'wicked and wicked' are both in red this stands out like other writing and the word wicked sounds an evil word so the red links to that as well.

This cover also has the price and the barcode on again for ease of use. This magazine is targeted at people who enjoy indie or rock music, so the part of the magazine that says 'top 25 rock movies' will make these readers want to read on into the magazine.

Finally the main image (Lily Allen and the Panthers) are all very central, this is so that they immediately catch your attention and they are the first things that you look at. Also the rest of the captions are placed around the cover an a frame like layout, this makes it look tidy and helps make the main images stand out. Furthermore the shot of Lily Allen is a model shot, this means that she posed for the shot and that they prepared her for this shot.
